Plastigauge ® is a precision clearance gauge for the measurement of clearance between fitted surfaces. It is particularly useful for measuring clearances in split bearings or in situations where a feeler gauge cannot be inserted

The most widely used application of Plastigauge ® is in the measurement of clearance in plain automotive bearings.

Plastigauge ® is also highly effective for measuring the clearance in large bearings which include:-

  • Marine drive shaft bearings
  • Stationary Engine bearings
  • Turbine housing bearings
  • Pump and pressure system bearings

Plastigauge ® also lends itself to measuring shaft end-float, flatness and clearance in pipe-flanges and cylinder heads.

Plastigauge ® is particularly effective for the measurement of separation in moulding tools and wherever it is required to determine the separation between hidden surfaces.

The red packs (PLA) available are for measuring clearances between 0.025mm - 0.175mm which equates to 0.001' - 0.007" They are supplied in envelopes containing 10 individual gauges.

Plastigauge is ideal for measuring clearances and Stationary Engine Parts seems to be one of few places that sell it in UK. The price here was one of the best. I bought it to measure big end clearance, shell bearing, on a single cylinder motorcycle with close flywheels. I could not have got a metal feeler gauge in.

Advantages: Can measure clearances on curved surfaces
Can measure in tight places.
Very simple to use
Clean to use

Disadvantages: One set doesn’t do all the sizes, a mixed packet would be good
