Petter style water cooled diesel head gasket, equivalent to Petter P/N 355820.
 
A high quality head gasket suitable for the Petter AB1W, AC1W and AC2W Series water cooled diesel engines.
 
These 0.040" gaskets are intended to replace those fitted to both AB1W, AC1W and AC2W engines. If this gasket is replacing the earlier thin 0.030" (Grey Halite) gasket when fitting ensure that cylinder block to cylinder head bump clearance is in the range 0.022" to 0.026" (0.56-0.66mm) by removing cylinder block shims and / or machining the top of cylinder block if there are not enough shims to achieve this.
 
The Later Goetz type gaskets with which most engines are fitted are a gold colour and these are a similar thickness to these new gaskets. To be sure of correct bump clearance stick two small pieces of lead (solder wire) on the top of the piston with grease then after tightening down new gasket to correct torque setting (20Lbs ft /3.46 kgf m) rotate the engine which should cause the lead to be squashed by the piston. Remove the head and check the lead with a Micrometer / Vernier, the thickness should be 0.022"-0.026" (0.56-0.66mm) if excessive remove shims from cylinder base or add shims if the clearance is below 0.022".
 
Note (1) : Torque setting on cylinder head /rocker stud should be 24 lbs/ft.
 
Note (2) : In production the modified AC1W and AC2W cylinders had 0.020" machined off the top. This was to compensate for the extra gasket thickness. These cylinders are identified by a letter G stamped between the push rod holes on the top of the cylinder block.
 
Note (3) : If the low cylinder head torque figure is preventing sufficient compression on the gaskets fire ring to form a seal on the remaining water ways a shim gasket that clears the fire ring can be made to sit either side of the head gasket to compensate. These engines were notorious for head gasket issues even in the days of active production and are not getting any younger, the poor design continues to be a problem in active service as these engines age.
