A replacement big end bush suitable for use in Lister D and DK engines.

These are not white metal lined like the originals but are machined from high quality phosphor bronze material and can be used as a replacement in the absence of the original and now obsolete part.

Fitting guidance:-

The correct approach is to press the bush in cold with an arbor press.

1, Ensure both the inside bore of the rod and the outside diameter of the bush are perfectly clean and free of any bruising or high spots.

2, Using an arbor press, press the bush into the rod taking care to ensure that the bush is aligned true to the bore of the rod and aim to align the large hole for the oil dipper. If the bush is not pressed in square you risk distorting the bush so make sure you setup everything to sit flat and true before starting.

3, Once pressed into place, if the two small oil holes do not align perfectly with the holes in the rod you can drill through the holes to open them out to match the con rod accordingly. If you have to do this make sure you de-burr the holes inside afterwards.

4, Try the fit of the bush on the crank pin sleeve, don't force it. If it is a tight fit or wont fit at this stage the bore of the pressed in bush will need to be reamed or honed to achieve a suitable slip fit between 0.0015” to 0.0025”

Notes:-

The bushes are machined to a very fine tolerance, within 0.001” and the clearance between a new crankshaft sleeve and bearing bush is only 0.0015” to 0.0025” so it really doesn’t take much bruising or distortion of the bearing bush to prevent a slip fit with the crank pin sleeve.

The alignment of the oil holes varies from one rod to the next, this aspect doesn’t seem to be very tightly regulated by Lister (indicated by original drawings) as the bushes were originally manufactured plain with only the hole for the dipper pre-machined and the holes for the two small oil ways were drilled through the rod and bush during manufacture as a single operation. Only replacement sleeves came pre-drilled and if alignment was not satisfactory they were drilled through the rod and bush together as Lister did during original manufacture.

All non-split bushes issued by Lister (this remains the same to this day) are supplied on the basis that they are to be reamed or honed to suit the desired final bore diameter after being pressed into place. This is common practice with small end bushes and the same applies to this Lister D and DK big end bush because of its unusual design of not being in two halves like a conventional big end. It is impossible to machine a bush made of a relatively soft material of this size and achieve a 0.001" tolerance on the resultant inner bore diameter when the amount of squeeze on the outside diameter is an unknown variable; hence the possible requirement for a final reaming or honing of the bush once pressed into place.

This is very well made and pressed in lovely

Disadvantages: The only difference was the hole for the oil dipper, on the original it is threaded but I don't think it will make a difference

A very good product with detailed instructions on its fitting. If I replaced another I would drill out and make wider the top two oil holes prior to fitting.
