Product Information

STC Series AC Synchronous Alternators

A range of quality dual voltage 230/415V three phase alternators available in a range of sizes and prices, so you can find the configuration that works best for your application.

The wide range of power ratings available in this range of alternators make them ideally suitable to operate as a primary AC power source for standard electrical lighting, household appliances, and general small scale residential use.

These units employ a harmonic excitation winding to allow them to provide self excitation and a stable output without a separate voltage regulator. This simple system minimizes the complexity and has proven reliable in operation. This range of alternators is designed for continuous duty operation within their power ratings. When driven at a constant rotational speed they generate current at a constant AC voltage and frequency. The internal connections may be changed to provide either 230V or 415V AC. Conversion between nominal voltages is simply a matter of changing contacts on a terminal strip inside the terminal box. These alternators may be coupled to a prime mover (driving engine) either by a direct shaft to shaft coupling or by conventional belt and pulleys. The AC frequency of the output power is determined solely by the speed of rotation of the prime mover, the alternators must spin at 1500 RPM to generate 50Hz power. They can be driven either clockwise or anti clockwise to suit your application.

Specifications for the STC Series generators are shown in the following table. All our alternators are CE approved for your safety and piece of mind. Please note that the standard shipping cost of £39.99 applies to mainland UK only, if you are overseas please contact us for a quotation.

These alternators are not suitable for grid connected applications without the use of a grid tied invertor.

As a rule of thumb, at 100% efficiency (which is an impossibility), each BHP is 746 Watts, so a 6 HP engine can theoretically develop 4.476 KW. Practically, there are losses in the alternator/generator, belts, bearings, etc. and the net output power is about 2/3 of the theoretical maximum. So figure 1/2 of the BHP is the number of KW you can realistically expect.

6 BHP from a 6/1 CS engine should yield 3 KW, a 12/2 CS should run 6 KW. Generators and alternators should be specified a little oversized (it improves efficiency and allows for starting surges) and energy stored in the flywheels will help start motors, if not too big and not too often. Compressors without pressure releasers will be very hard to start, fans will be very easy. Several small, hard to start motors will work better than a single large hard to start motor as long as the motors do not try to start at the same time. A voltage/current sensor can be set up to allow a motor to start only when the generator load is low enough.
